Pitches

Contents > Lead/Bass Motif Editor > Pitches

Use these controls to specify a pitch for each step of the motif. Adjust the values by dragging the mouse up and down while holding down the left mouse button. For fine control hold down the CTRL key while dragging. The pitch can be set to any scale tone over a 3 octave range. The wide lines mark the octave positions. Use the track's Octave control to adjust the coarse pitch.

It's important to note that these pitch values refer to positions in the scale rather than chromatic note values. The final pitch used depends on the choice of Key, the track's Octave setting and possibly the current chord too.

Use the Menu button to affect the whole row at once...

Reset fill with default pitch
Randomise fill with random pitches
Rising fill with rising pitches
Falling fill with falling pitches
Alberti (R,5,3,5) fill with Alberti (R,5,3,5) pattern (number of steps must be 4, 8 or 12)
+7 (up Octave) raise pitches by 7 scale steps (up an octave)
+2 (up 3rd) raise pitches by 2 scale steps (up a third)
+1 (up 2nd) raise pitches by 1 scale step (up a second)
-1 (down 2nd) lower pitches by 1 scale step (down a second)
-2 (down 3rd) lower pitches by 2 scale steps (down a third)
-7 (down Octave) lower pitches by 7 scale steps (down an octave)
Invert invert the pitches
Reverse reverse the order of the pitches
Rotate Left rotate pitches 1 step to left (earlier in time)
Rotate Right rotate pitches 1 step to right (later in time)

If a shifted pitch exceeds the 3 octave range then it is automatically raised or lowered an octave to bring it back in range.

Rather than manually selecting a pitch for each step, it is often easier to use the Random button a few times to find an interesting sequence.

Shift and Fit Buttons

The Shift and Fit buttons control how the pitches are affected by the current chord. Use these buttons in combination to select one of four different pitch adjustment modes...

Manual The pitches are not affected by the chord, any scale tone can be picked manually.
Fit The pitches are adjusted to use the nearest chord tone. (Lead Motif Default)
Shift The pitches are shifted up the scale to follow the chord root. (Bass Motif Default)
Shift and Fit The pitches are shifted up the scale to follow the chord root and then are adjusted to use the nearest chord tone.

If a shifted pitch exceeds the 3 octave range then it is automatically lowered an octave to bring it back in range.
