Motif Arrangement

Contents > Section Pages > Motif Arrangement

In JUMP terminology, a "Motif" is a musical phrase that is 1 bar (measure) in length. Each track has 4 independent motifs available in each section. A track can also "rest".

Use these arrangement controls to specify which motif is played in each bar by each track. The image above shows the same motif repeated for 8 bars. The pattern below is a more complex example.

This shows the track playing motifs 1, 2, 3, 4 over 4 bars then repeating them over another 4 bars.

To select which motif to play for each bar click with the left mouse button and choose an item from the pop-up menu...

You can also click with the right mouse button to step through the choices (or click with the right mouse button while holding down the CTRL key to step backwards through the choices).

To edit the actual content of a motif select the Edit Motif option in the pop-up menu.

Use each track's Menu button to access a range of useful time-saving functions...

Raise Content Pitch (up 3rd) raise pitch of each motif's content (Lead/Bass tracks only)
Lower Content Pitch (down 3rd) lower pitch of each motif's content (Lead/Bass tracks only)
Copy Track copy arrangement and all motif's content from track above (not available on tracks 1, 4, 7 or 9)
Quite simple patterns such as 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2 work well because motifs benefit from being repeated. JUMP can inject life into a repeated motif by automatically applying chord changes, humanisation and probability functions.

One easy way to develop a single repeating motif (using motif 1) into a longer phrase is to use the Generate Motifs 2, 3 & 4 from Motif 1 menu option to generate variations of motif 1 in motif 2, motif 3 and motif 4 and the Fill with 1, 2, 3, 4 menu option to make the arrangement cycle through the motifs. The Generate Motifs 2, 3 & 4 from Motif 1 menu option uses random variations and so can be used again and again to search for interesting variations of motif 1.

The Generate Theme menu option provides a shortcut that randomises motif 1, generates variations in motifs 2, 3 and 4 and fills the arrangement with a repeating 1, 2, 3, 4 pattern.

Three types of motif content are supported, depending on the type of track...

Each type of motif has it's own specialised editor. To edit the actual content of a motif, click on a bar in the arrangement and select the Edit Motif option in the pop-up menu. Alternatively click on the Menu button for the track and select an Edit Motif option from the pop-up menu. Yet another way to edit a motif is to left click on a bar while holding down the CTRL key.

Note the main differences between a Lead and a Bass motif are the default settings for the Shift and Fit buttons and the track's Octave. This means that you can, for instance, use a spare bass track as a lead track simply by adjusting the track's Octave and if required the motif's Shift and Fit buttons.
