| General MIDI |
The sound synthesizer facilities of the average PC rely on a system called GM (General MIDI). This provides 16 MIDI channels.
MIDI channel 10 is dedicated to drum/rhythm sounds, with sounds mapped out on the keyboard in a standard order. Use the Rhythm Motif Editor to select which drums are used and to edit their patterns.
A choice of 128 different pitched instruments or "patches" are available on the other 15 MIDI channels. Click on the Mix Page Patch controls to select from a menu of these standard patches.
Because most GM devices are only able to use MIDI channel 10 for drums, JUMP's default settings make all three rhythm tracks (i.e. tracks 10, 11 and 12) share the same MIDI channel...
Track Channel 10 10 11 10 12 10
If your setup allows drum sounds to be assigned more flexibly, then change track 11 to use MIDI channel 11 and change track 12 to use MIDI channel 12. You will then have 3 fully independent rhythm tracks...
Track Channel 10 10 11 11 12 12
When using GM patches leave the MSB and LSB controls in their default off states "--".
When using GM drum/rhythm sounds on channel 10 leave the Patch, MSB and LSB controls in their default off states "--".
| You are not limited to just using General MIDI. JUMP is capable of driving an entire studio full of MIDI equipment or the latest software synthesizers (use a "Virtual MIDI Cable" to connect JUMP's output to other MIDI software). Consult your manuals for further information. |
